The Art of the Seat: 4 Continental Treasures for the Discerning Eye
21st August 2026
For true connoisseurs, an antique is more than furniture. It is a tangible piece of history. And exceptional antique seating bridges the gap between historical grandeur and modern curated spaces. At Charles Harness Antiques, our collection offers the perfect fusion of craftsmanship, patina, and pedigree for your next design project.
The Curation: Four Masterworks
Pair of Swedish Carved Stools These date to the late 1800s and have that quiet, pared-back Nordic look that never quite goes out of fashion. The carving's crisp, the finish nicely weathered rather than pristine. We'd put these at the foot of a bed, or a pair on either side of a sunroom window—somewhere they can just sit and look understated.
19th Century Venetian Armchairs and Stool This is the showy one. A trio with proper sweeping curves and ornate frames, it is the kind of Italian piece that doesn't try to blend in. It works best somewhere with room to breathe—a grand drawing room, or a dressing suite where it can be the thing people notice first.
Pair of Italian Carved Oak Chairs Heavier, more grounded, with carving deep enough that you can really feel the grain under your hand, these make good hall chairs on either side of a console table by the front door. Honestly, they'd hold their own as host chairs at a dining table, too.
Gustavian Style Swedish Stool The smallest and most flexible of the four. It features clean neoclassical lines and that soft, muted Gustavian palette, making it genuinely useful in a way the bigger pieces aren't. It could work as a vanity stool, or you can push it against a wall and use it as a little accent table.
Mixing eras and European origins creates an authentic, layered home that evolves over time. These exceptional examples of antique seating are available for viewing at our Warwickshire showroom. View the full gallery at Charles Harness Antiques to secure your next acquisition.
